just now i watched justin bieber's "baby" (click) mv on youtube. the song was pretty good.. but the video, sigh.
- the setting: "bowling alley", but i think that's their excuse for dim lighting and boys/girls standing around and flashy lights and smokey backgrounds and (non-alcoholic) drinking... you know, like a club for children
- scenes of the boys/girls groups separated by a bowling alley alternated with random forehead-to-forehead scences between jb and the main girl (how did he get over there) that usually ended with the girl pushing him away all "oh no you didn't"
- some boy shoved another for no reason and then they randomly broke into dance. those were some good breakdancers they filmed, but see? cluuubbbing
- (there was no story. the song is about what, past love? and this video was basically kids, CHILDREN, with too much make up and attitude flirting with each other)
not to sound like a prudey homeschool mom (another thing we learned in psychology would be not to stereotype / generalize, shrug), but sometimes the mainstream is dangerous. real life is probably not quite like this (yet), but media plays a part in constructing the 'standards' that people feel compelled to meet. and i think their influence is strongest over people who are too young to handle it? usually i think babies do awesome things, but this video (click again!) is kind of disconcerting at the same time. i hope he's an outlier.
